Baldwin Lake
About Baldwin Lake
Baldwin Lake is a natural lake of the San Bernardino Mountains, in San Bernardino County, California. It is a vast land area destitute of trees and brush due to its quartz pebble terrain. During the set seasons the lake gathers large about of water. Because the lake is shallow in depth, it usually drys up during the summer months. The lake was named after Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, who is also found on the City of Baldwin Park.
Baldwin Lake was originally discovered in 1845 by Benjamin Davis Wilson who was tracking problem Indians. He tracked them throughout the mountain passage that was to lead him to the upper desert near Lucerne. The area was full of black bear. At this location Wilson took 11 bear pelts and on the return to Jurupa (Riverside) they took another 11 pelts. Wilson named the Lake "Big Bear" and the area Big Bear Valley.
